Creeks, river, lakes - where to launch

Whether you prefer to boat, canoe, kayak or standup paddleboard, the creeks, lakes and river in the immediate area provide plenty of opportunities to enjoy your hobby.

Ruth Thompson, events and marketing coordinator with Chattanooga Outdoor, an agency whose mission it is to promote, maintain and enhance the natural and built recreation resources in the area, said there are innumerable places to launch or dock a boat and dozens of places to put in a canoe or kayak.

"As far as canoes or kayaks, we don't recommend putting in on the river downtown because the current is so strong," she said. "It can be done, and it is a great experience, but you better know what you are doing.

"We recommend utilizing the creeks."

She added that for an all-around good boating experience, Nickajack Lake is hard to beat.

At right is a short list of places Thompson recommends to Outdoor Chattanooga visitors looking for places to canoe, boat, kayak or standup paddle.
